Gulfport, Mississippi, is the largest city on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and an important center for beaches, fishing, shipping, and coastal recreation. The city faces the Mississippi Sound, with barrier islands lying offshore and helping shape its relatively calm coastal waters. Gulfport Beach stretches along the shoreline with wide sandy areas, while the Port of Gulfport serves as a major deep-water shipping facility. The city combines a working waterfront with marinas, restaurants, parks, and family attractions, giving it a character shaped as much by maritime activity as by its role as a seaside destination.

Gulfport’s identity is closely connected to the Gulf Coast’s fishing and maritime traditions. Commercial fishing, boatbuilding, shipping, and seafood processing have all contributed to the local economy and culture. The city’s history also reflects the influence of hurricanes and changing coastal geography, with storms repeatedly reshaping beaches, barrier islands, and waterfront infrastructure. Nearby communities add further cultural depth through longstanding seafood, music, and coastal traditions. Today, Gulfport’s harbor remains an important working area, while local events, museums, and waterfront activities help preserve connections to the people and industries that have shaped the Mississippi coast.

Gulfport Beach is one of the city’s most accessible attractions, with shallow water, broad sand, picnic areas, and space for swimming and paddling. Jones Park provides waterfront trails, green space, and views across the Mississippi Sound. From Gulfport, seasonal ferries travel to Ship Island, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, where visitors can explore beaches, dunes, and historic Fort Massachusetts. The surrounding waters support boating, kayaking, and fishing, while the barrier islands provide habitat for shorebirds, sea turtles, and native coastal vegetation. These protected islands also form an important natural buffer between the Gulf and mainland communities.

Seafood is central to Gulfport’s food culture, with shrimp, oysters, crab, fish, and other Gulf Coast catches appearing prominently on local menus. The city’s location beside the Mississippi Sound has supported a long fishing tradition, and the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor remains a hub for recreational and commercial boats. Gulfport is also home to the Mississippi Aquarium, where exhibits focus on aquatic life native to Mississippi and the Gulf Coast. Another distinctive feature is the city’s connection to Ship Island: the seasonal ferry makes Gulfport a practical departure point for reaching a protected barrier-island landscape and Fort Massachusetts across the Mississippi Sound.
