Toyama is a regional capital on the Sea of Japan coast, set between Toyama Bay and the mountains of the Northern Japan Alps. The city is known for its close relationship with both the sea and the alpine interior, with waterways, fertile plains, and snow-fed rivers shaping the surrounding landscape. Toyama also serves as a gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the mountain communities of the wider prefecture. Within the city, modern cultural facilities, historic districts, gardens, and a rebuilt castle create a varied urban landscape that reflects Toyama’s position between coastal and mountain regions.

Toyama has a strong association with medicine, traditional commerce, and regional craftsmanship. The city’s pharmaceutical trade developed around traveling medicine sellers known as Toyama no kusuriuri, who carried household remedies throughout Japan using a distinctive system of leaving medicines with customers and collecting payment later. Toyama Castle and its surrounding park recall the city’s former feudal administration, while the nearby Kansui Park has become a prominent contemporary gathering place. Traditional crafts include Etchu washi paper, which is used for items such as lanterns, stationery, and other handmade products.

Toyama’s natural setting is particularly evident along the Jinzu River and at the foot of the Northern Japan Alps. The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design overlooks Kansui Park and combines art exhibitions with a large rooftop space. The Glass Art Museum, designed as part of the Toyama Kirari complex, highlights the city’s long connection with glassmaking and contemporary design. Beyond the urban area, the Tateyama mountain range provides access to high-elevation landscapes, including the dramatic Kurobe Dam, while Toyama Bay offers coastal scenery and views toward the mountains.

Seafood is one of Toyama’s defining culinary features, with Toyama Bay supplying firefly squid, white shrimp, yellowtail, and other fish. Sushi and sashimi are especially associated with the region, while masu-zushi consists of salted trout pressed over vinegared rice and wrapped in bamboo leaves. The city also has a tradition of sake brewing, supported by clean water from the surrounding mountains. Toyama’s reputation for water extends to its agricultural areas, where snowmelt feeds rice fields and rivers. The combination of alpine water, fertile plains, and a productive bay gives local food a distinctly regional character.
