Ponta do Ouro is a coastal settlement in southern Mozambique, close to the South African border and the southern end of the Mozambique Channel. The town is known for its broad sandy beach, warm waters, coastal dunes, and strong connection to marine activities. It lies within the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, which protects reefs, seagrass beds, estuaries, mangroves, and surrounding waters. Ponta do Ouro has developed around fishing, tourism, and water sports, while its location near Maputo makes it one of the most accessible beach destinations in southern Mozambique.

Local life in Ponta do Ouro is closely connected to the sea, with fishing and small-scale coastal trade forming part of the area's identity. The wider Maputo Province has strong Tsonga cultural traditions, reflected in local food, music, language, and community life. Traditional fishing practices remain visible along the coast, alongside a growing tourism economy based on diving, boating, and beach activities. The town also sits within a broader cross-border cultural landscape linking southern Mozambique with South Africa and Eswatini. These connections have influenced movement, trade, and everyday life along the coast.

The Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve protects a varied coastal environment of coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangroves, estuaries, sandy beaches, and vegetated dunes. The waters support dolphins, whale sharks, rays, coral fish, and sea turtles, while seasonal whale sightings add another feature to the marine landscape. Snorkeling and scuba diving provide access to the reefs, while boat trips offer opportunities to observe marine wildlife. The surrounding coastline also supports surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, and fishing. Nearby Ponta Malongane and Ponta Mamoli extend the protected coastal landscape northward.

Seafood is an important part of dining in Ponta do Ouro, with fresh fish, prawns, crab, and other shellfish commonly served in local restaurants. Mozambican cooking also makes extensive use of coconut, cassava, maize, and chili, with seafood often prepared in sauces influenced by these ingredients. The area's marine reserve is particularly notable for its turtle nesting beaches, which support loggerhead and leatherback turtles. Another distinctive feature is Ponta do Ouro's role within the Ponta do Ouro-Kosi Bay Transfrontier Conservation Area, linking protected coastal habitats across Mozambique and South Africa.
