Penrith is a market town in Cumbria, northern England, situated between the Lake District and the northern Pennines. Its location has long made it a useful stopping point for journeys across the region, while its town centre retains a traditional market-town character with stone buildings, independent shops, cafés, and a central market square. Penrith also provides access to the Eden Valley and the surrounding countryside, with the nearby River Eden and a landscape of farmland, hills, and limestone country adding to its distinctive setting.

Penrith has a strong local identity shaped by its position near the historic border between England and Scotland. Penrith Castle, now a substantial ruin beside the town centre, reflects the area's strategic importance, while the remains of the medieval stronghold of Brougham Castle lie nearby beside the River Eamont. Another notable landmark is the Beacon, a wooded hill above the town that was historically associated with warning fires. Local traditions are also reflected in the annual Penrith Agricultural Show, which brings together farming, livestock, crafts, and rural communities from the surrounding area.

The surrounding area contains several distinctive landscapes and historic sites. Brougham Castle stands beside the River Eamont within a wider setting of meadows and woodland, while Lowther Castle and its extensive grounds lie a short distance from Penrith. The ancient monument of Mayburgh Henge, a large prehistoric stone enclosure, is also nearby, along with King Arthur's Round Table, another prehistoric earthwork. The Eden Valley provides opportunities for walking and cycling, while the western edge of the town offers access toward the Lake District and destinations such as Ullswater, one of the region's major lakes.

Penrith's food traditions reflect its position within a farming region known for livestock, dairy production, and locally grown produce. Cumberland sausage is a well-known regional food, traditionally made with coarsely chopped pork and distinctive seasoning, while Cumberland rum butter is another local speciality. The town's market has historically provided a place for farmers and traders to sell regional products, and nearby villages support farm shops and small food producers. Penrith is also closely associated with red squirrels, with the nearby Greystoke Forest and other woodland areas providing habitat for this native species.
