Popoyo is a small coastal community on Nicaragua's southwestern Pacific coast, in the department of Rivas. It is known for its broad sandy shoreline, rocky coastal points, and consistent Pacific surf. The surrounding landscape remains largely rural, with pastureland, farms, tropical vegetation, and small settlements extending inland from the beach. Popoyo has developed around surfing and small-scale tourism while retaining the character of a coastal village rather than a large resort area. Its location along the Tola coastline also places it near several other beaches and surf breaks, including Playa Santana and Playa Colorado.

Local life in Popoyo remains closely connected to fishing, farming, and the ocean. Fishing families use small boats to work the coastal waters, while cattle ranching and agriculture are important activities in the surrounding countryside. Surf culture has become another part of the community's identity, bringing surf schools, locally owned accommodations, restaurants, and other small businesses to the area. The wider Tola region has a strong rural character, with traditional Nicaraguan food, Spanish-speaking communities, and agricultural practices continuing alongside the newer tourism economy. Community events and everyday life remain centered on the coast and nearby villages.

Surfing is Popoyo's principal attraction, with several breaks along the rocky and sandy coastline offering different conditions depending on swell and tide. The main Popoyo break is known for powerful waves breaking over a reef, while nearby Playa Santana provides another popular surfing location. Other coastal breaks can be reached along the Tola shoreline, including Playa Colorado and Playa Rosada. Away from the water, the countryside provides opportunities for horseback riding, cycling, and exploring rural roads. The coastal environment also includes tide pools, rocky headlands, sandy beaches, and tropical vegetation that support a variety of marine and bird life.

Seafood is common in Popoyo, reflecting the area's Pacific fishing traditions, with fresh fish, shrimp, lobster, and other marine products appearing on local menus. Nicaraguan staples such as gallo pinto, tortillas, beans, plantains, and fresh cheese are also widely served. The area's Pacific coast is known for warm water and year-round surfing conditions, although wave size and quality vary with seasonal swells and weather. Popoyo's combination of reef breaks, fishing communities, rural farmland, and small locally operated businesses gives it a distinct identity within Nicaragua's Pacific coastal region.
