Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, has long served as a cultural and trade crossroads in the Andaman Sea. Centuries ago, it was a stopover for merchants trading tin, spices, and textiles, with influences from Chinese, Portuguese, Indian, and Malay travelers still reflected in the island’s architecture and cuisine. In Phuket Old Town, rows of sino-portuguese shophouses line streets like Thalang and Dibuk, with pastel facades, ornate windows, and hidden courtyards now housing cafés, textile boutiques, and art galleries. Baan Chinpracha, a preserved mansion built in 1903, offers a closer look at the lifestyle of a once-prominent Chinese-Thai family.

Though Phuket is known for its beaches, there’s more than shoreline to explore. Inland, the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary protects rainforest habitat home to gibbons, civets, and exotic birds. A short hike leads to Bang Pae Waterfall, often visited by locals for weekend picnics. Farther south, Promthep Cape draws visitors at sunset, but mornings are quieter and offer uninterrupted views over the Andaman Sea. Boat excursions from Chalong Pier visit nearby islands such as Coral Island and Racha Yai, where snorkeling and diving reveal colorful reefs and sea turtles gliding over sandy bottoms.
